RibbonDiff overview

RibbonDiff for macOS gives you a clean, Mac-native, side-by-side diff workspace where both panes stay editable. As you type, paste, or open files, RibbonDiff updates the diff continuously. A visual center ribbon links corresponding change blocks across both sides so you stay oriented even in large edits and long scrolls. Version 4.2.0 adds Workspace file search, making it faster to find matching text across a project and jump directly to the right file and line.

Key features:
  • Side-by-side editors with live diffing.
  • Visual ribbon that links corresponding change blocks across both sides.
  • Workspace mode lets you open a folder or .rd-workspace file in a sidebar, browse project files, search file contents, manage files and folders, and move between related comparisons without losing context.
  • The Workspace sidebar includes file tree and file search modes, configurable item size and line height, native macOS file icons, open-file indicators, context menus, multi-select, drag moves, and a collapsible Modified Files quick-access section.
  • Each window has one shared Workspace across its tabs. Option-click or Open in New Tab opens a file in a new tab, clicking an open file switches to its tab, and Workspace-opened files stay pinned to the left editor.
  • Workspaces can be saved as .rd-workspace files and reopened later, with folder expansion state preserved.
  • Git-backed Version History lets you browse branches and revisions for files inside a Git-backed Workspace and compare against read-only historical previews.
  • Version selectors show commit summaries, short hashes, authors, and dates; support search by summary, hash, or author; and switch between Affected and All commit scopes.
  • Live Edit in the version selector returns you to the editable working-tree file after inspecting history.
  • Persistent whitespace filters help ignore indentation style, leading whitespace, and trailing whitespace differences when needed.
  • Next / Previous Change navigation works from buttons, menus, and shortcuts.
  • Per-pane Find fields use native macOS behavior, including Find Next/Previous, Use Selection for Find, recent searches, and Esc to return focus to the editor.
  • Code-editor behaviors: Tab / Shift-Tab and Command-] / Command-[ indent or outdent lines, and Return keeps indentation.
  • Adjustable editor font, font size, line spacing, Ribbon Column width, and Light/Dark Find Match Overlay colors.
  • Open files can reload automatically when they change on disk, with a prompt before replacing unsaved edits.
  • Open / Edit / Save / Save As... per pane, with overwrite protection for unsaved edits.
  • Expanded text encoding support for opening/saving files, plus Choose Encoding and Reload with Encoding when auto-detection is ambiguous.
  • Open two files directly from Terminal / Finder (for example: open -a RibbonDiff left.txt right.txt).
  • Built-in syntax highlighting for Plain Text, Swift, C-like, Java, PHP, Go, Ada, Rust, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, JSON, YAML, HTML/XML, and Markdown.
  • Custom syntax colors, customizable diff colors/backgrounds, and JSON theme import/export.
  • Keep multiple comparisons organized using macOS window tabs.
Free Download + Pro Unlock:
  • RibbonDiff is free to download and works in Limited mode for comparing typed or pasted text.
  • Workspace, Workspace file search, Version History, and file workflows (Open / Drag & Drop / Save / Save As...) are available with a 7-day Pro Trial or a one-time Lifetime Pro in-app purchase.
  • The Pro Trial is one-time and does not auto-renew.
  • If you previously purchased RibbonDiff as a paid app, Pro Lifetime is automatically unlocked (use Restore Purchases if needed).

Paste your "before" and "after", open two files, or browse a project with Workspace search and Version History, then review changes with confidence - clearly, quickly, and with a Mac-native feel.

What's new in version 4.2.0

  • Search text across files in the current Workspace.
  • Switch between the Workspace file tree and file search from the sidebar or with Command-1 and Command-2.
  • Use Command-Shift-F to open Find in Workspace and focus the Workspace search field.
  • Search results are grouped by file in Workspace order and include line numbers, match counts, highlighted previews, and folder context.
  • Click a result file or matching line to open the file in the left editor and select the matching text.
  • Workspace search preserves query, result expansion, and scroll position during safe refreshes, and updates when visible Workspace files change or are saved.
Fixed
  • Fixed diff overlay rendering for plain-text and deferred-syntax files, including .properties files.
  • Restored saved Workspace window frames more reliably when reopening Workspace documents.
  • Fixed cases where new windows could reopen smaller than expected.

I shouldn't have been so dismissive in my previous post. This app looks like a killer replacement for Apple's File Merge which these days is tied to and inseparable from Xcode. The "ribbon" concept is far better than text comparison tools that leave huge gaping expanses of wasted screen space when scrolling through files being compared, and is also an aid to comprehending the files' differences.
